After a very restful Summer spent mostly in lovely Austria, Margaret has returned to the Wiener Staatsoper for the 17/18 Season. The first part of the opera season will see Margaret performing the roles of Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Varvara (Katja Kabanova), eine Magd (Daphne) and a Walküre and Rheintochter in an adaptation of Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen for children. In October, Margaret will perform the alto solo in Haydn's Theresienmesse in Sitzenberg, Nieder Österreich and in December, Margaret has a Matinee recital in the Mahler-Saal of the Staatsoper with colleagues Orhan Yildiz and Cecile Restier. She will also give a Liederabend of Australian, American and British repertoire in the Musikverein in early January, which has been selected to be recorded by Ö1 for release at a later date.
The 16/17 Opera season is already shaping up to be a full and exciting one for Margaret, it began with the revival of the role of Anton in the lovely Kinderoper Pünktchen und Anton. Following that Margaret will debut the role of La Haine in Gluck's Armide and while on tour to Japan will sing Marcellina under the baton of Maestro Muti in Le Nozze di Figaro. December will have Margaret performing both the second Niece in Peter Grimes and reprising the role of Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel.
I have been very busy for the last few months and have let my website fall behind, so, here is an update of what I have been up to since the 15/16 season started!
My season began with Giovanna in Rigoletto which was a lovely experience, not a big role but a lovely one nonetheless! In October I covered Miranda in The Tempest and Smeton in Anna Bolena for which had the honour of stepping in for a sick colleague for rehearsals. To get to see Edita Gruberova (who was singing Anna Bolena) work was a great privilege.
Rehearsals for Hänsel und Gretel began mid October and due to a late arriving Hänsel I got to rehearse the role for the first 3 weeks. I then had the opportunity to jump in for an unwell Daniela Sindram in the Generalprobe of Hänsel und Gretel with Christian Thielemann conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra! It was definitely a day to remember! I also prepared the role of Charlotte in Werther (which I will be covering while touring to Oman in April), two roles in Veç Makropolis and a handful of smaller roles.
January will see me reprising Giovanna and Waltraute in Die Walküre and in Febuary I will debut the role of the Kitchen boy on Rusalka
All in all it has been a productive start to the season!
After an intense first 6 months at the Wiener Staatsoper, the season came to a close for Margaret with the final performance if the Tempest at the end of June. During the period of January-June Margaret performed the roles of Tebaldo in Don Carlos and Waltraute in Die Walküre as part of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. She also learned and understudied many roles including Miranda in the Tempest, Charlotte in Werther, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Flora in La Traviata and Fenena in Nabucco. Needless to say, the summer holiday brought a welcome chance to rest!
Now as we head to the beginning of the 15/16 season, Margaret is thoroughly enjoying her break, but is also preparing her new repertoire including Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Smeton in Anna Bolena, Tisbe in Cenerentola, Christa in Věc Makropulos and Olga in Eugene Onegin. Margaret's first performances will be of Giovanna in Rigoletto which opens the 15/16 opera season on the 4th of September.
